In their first few years of writing, many writers are hobbyists. They enjoy playing with words, and expressing themselves. Many writers stay at this level. Their writing is satisfying, but they have no desire to make money at it.

When you decide you want to make money from writing however, selling is always just as important as writing. From my own experience, and from working with my students, I find that many writers find that selling is a real challenge, because they need to change their mindset.

They need to understand who’s buying their writing, and why, so that they can sell more of their writing – and make a great income.

Who Buys Your Writing, and Why?

When you sell your writing, you need to consider the buyer, and his needs. If you don’t make an attempt to understand who buys your writing, and why, you won’t sell as much as you could. In fact, you may become so depressed at your lack of success that you give up writing altogether.

Everyone who buys your writing buys for a reason. Let’s look at some examples of writing markets, and why these markets buy your writing.

In the case of book publishers, they publish books to generate profits. Your books will help them to do this, and to make the most profit your books need to sell extremely well. If your books don’t have a good “sell through” (sales percentage versus returns) you won’t be offered another book contract – your writing career with that publisher is dead. So you must not only write your book to the best of your ability, but also do as much to market (promote) it as you can.

In the case of magazines, they sell advertising; the advertisements in the magazine pay the bills. So your articles are of secondary importance to the advertising. Any magazine which loses advertisers will buy less editorial content (articles). If they lose too much advertising, magazines go out of business.

In the case of Web sites, they sell advertising and often products too. Your articles help them to sell both advertising and products.

When You Understand Why Buyers Buy, You’ll Sell More

The major reason you need to know WHY buyers buy, is that it takes your focus off yourself. You understand that buyers have requirements, and you’ll do your best to meet them. In other words, you become a professional writer, not a hobbyist.

You’ll make much more money writing when you understand your buyers. The information in this article will help you, but it’s just the beginning. The more you know, the more you earn.
