The out-sourcing sites can be a great way to make money as a freelance writer. However, they do require a considerable amount of skill and know-how. I’m not a big proponent of these sites, simply because most writers have no idea how to use them effectively.
Mistakes writers make include:
* Bidding too low – this is a fatal mistake;
* Failing to study successful bids and bidders;
* Not having a Web site;
* Not making full use of a site’s facilities – not asking enough questions of project posters, and not posting work samples, for example.
All these mistakes can be corrected. In Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON) I encourage writers to use the out-sourcing sites as training wheels. They’re excellent for new writers to start seeing writing as a BUSINESS, which it is.
Here’s part of a message I wrote to a SYWON member:
Re the out-sourcing sites. What’s vital here is: experience and persistence. If you enjoy bidding on projects, then you’ll need to spend considerable time at it. Stick with ONE site – you need to spend time, and you can’t adequately learn the ins and outs of two sites.
Getting projects is methodical. Study the writers who get gigs. You’ll find many gigs are never won, because posters just want an idea of prices and ideas for their projects.
You need to bid a lot, say 10 bids to one project won in the beginning, while you’re learning – that’s if you want to use the sites effectively.
My own inclination is to say forget it, you can make more money elsewhere.

However, if you wish, you can earn a great income on these sites – but not if you bid too low. Your emphasis must always be to use the sites as a marketing venue, so that you build a stable of clients over time.
In SYWON, you use the sites as a training ground, only. As stated, it’s easier to get your own clients, and you can charge what you like.
