Writing jobs are everywhere. Every business needs a writer occasionally; some even businesses pay writers a retainer, so they can get their marketing collateral written as soon as they need it.

My favorite tip for my writing students - and for you - is to be proactive when you’re looking for writing jobs.

Forget the job boards. Why? For two simple reasons:

* You’re competing with hundreds of other writers

* Any business or publisher which has the staff time to wade through hundreds of email messages is not a well-run business. They won’t pay you well, nor will they pay you quickly, 9 times out of 10.

The easiest, simplest and fastest way to get writing jobs is to ASK for them. Post ads on the classified boards. Write articles for article directories. Be daring and invest in your writing career by taking out paid advertisements.

Here’s a writer who uses free classified advertising.

Free Classified Ads Always On Call By Christine Cristiano reports on the effects of classifieds:

“After the first round of classified ads was posted, I received an inquiry from a music production company in need of a press release. I sent them a detailed proposal including my price, turnaround time and payment details (Paypal only) – I was granted the assignment. Next, I was contacted by a small company looking for a writer to proofread and edit their website. Again, I responded with a detailed proposal and was granted the assignment. That assignment was followed by a request to write a resume for an individual who was moving out of the country and seeking employment in their new home country.”
