Want to make great money as a copywriter? Get into the newsletter writing business. Custom newsletter copywriting demands both writing skill, and public relations flair.

Although many companies hire public relations firms to produce their own newsletters, there’s plenty of room for freelance copywriters on long term contracts.

How to Get Hired

The easiest way to get hired to write newsletters is to propose a newsletter to one of your current copywriting clients. They already know the value of staying in touch with their customers, and they know you - but perhaps they don’t know that you can provide them with newsletters.

You’ll find that many of your clients will jump at the opportunity when you propose a newsletter. Chances are it’s been on their radar for years, but the time and effort required to get a newsletter off the ground has been too much.

Write a proposal as you would for any other copywriting job. I recommend writing the proposal before you offer this service, because the easier you can make it for your client to say “Yes!” the more likely it is that they’ll agree.

Just outline the newsletter in both print and online format. The benefit of an online format is that the newsletter remains on the company’s Web site, attracting traffic, and making sales for years.

What you’ll include in the newsletter depends on the company, and their target market. Think in terms of a feature article, advertising for new and older products, as well as company news, and staff bios.

Your proposal doesn’t need to include a mockup, this comes later, when you’re given the go-ahead. Just make an outline of the content you’ll include, and devise a sales pitch - the reasons a newsletter will increase sales and profits.

Creating a newsletter proposal shouldn’t take you longer than an hour. Once you’ve created it, use it as a template for future newsletter proposals to other clients.

Newsletters are fun to write, and they add to your bottom line, since most newsletter contracts are for a year. Each newsletter you write can add a very nice boost to your copywriting income each and every month.
