I’ve had a couple of questions this week from writers about their portfolio blog and standard writer’s blog, so I thought I’d write this post to clear up confusion.
As a writer you need a portfolio blog, or a Web site. This portfolio is more or less set and forget – aside from when you update your portfolio. Just post all your samples to the site. You can offer them as downloads if you wish, or you can just post 200 words of a sample, and offer an email address so prospects can contact you for the rest of the sample.
All enquiries about your writing and hiring you are referred to your portfolio blog, so that people can qualify themselves as clients. If they’re not a good match for you, they can see that from your portfolio blog.
Your portfolio blog (or site) also generates enquiries on its own, so your contact details should and MUST be prominent. Don’t be a blushing introvert on the Web, it doesn’t work.
Your second blog is your writer’s or “publicity” blog; this generates enquiries for you.
Your writer’s blog can be on any topic you choose. It doesn’t have to focus on what you do as a writer, that’s the job of your portfolio blog. So my writer’s blog is on marketing copywriting.
Yours could be about parenting, celebrities – whatever. It’s just a venue for you to collect eyeballs so that they’re exposed to your information. Include links to your portfolio blog, and make sure that HIRE ME is somewhere prominent on the blog.
If you’ve got questions about either style of blog, please ask them in the Comments section below.
