Your first writer’s blog – get clients fast

Here’s a question from Yasmin, a reader:

“I’m confused about blogging. What do I use a blog for?”

My response:

If you’re new to blogging Yasmin, set up your first blog as a portfolio/ client attractor/ and visibility blog.

When I set up my angelabooth.com site a few years ago, I also set up the Creativity Factory Blog at http://angelabooth.com/wp/. As you can see, this blog is a WordPress blog, set up to publicize my name, and my copywriting services business. (Here’s a link to my tutorial on how to set up your own WordPress blog.)

I chose to make the focus of the Creativity Factory blog marketing, copywriting and SEO, because that’s what’s interesting and fun for me. I could just as easily have made the blog’s topic fly fishing, golf, or pets. The topic isn’t important, what’s important is that your NAME is out there, getting you attention and clients.

Many writers set up writing blogs, which is fine, but if you’re a new writer, you may not have much to write about. This can be dangerous, because I’ve seen many writers’ blogs degenerate into complaints and whining. Please don’t do this – your blog posts (and everything you do on the Web) is forever. So years from now, you don’t want an agent Googling you and finding anything unprofessional; it’s not good for your reputation.

So your blog is primarily to get your name known, to act as a portfolio, and to attract clients.

You’ll find that it’s VERY effective. Every writer I’ve badgered into blogging has told me that they wish they’d started blogging years ago. Having clients and editors come to you is much better than constantly looking for writing gigs.

And of course, with professional bloggers in such high demand, your blog will get you blogging gigs too.
