Are you writing and selling ebooks to boost your freelance writing income?

Considering that you only need a word processor to get started, and I assume you’ve got one of those, selling ebooks is hands-down the easiest way ever to make money as a freelance writer.

I’m often asked how to start writing ebooks, and my answer’s always the same: If you can write articles, you can write ebooks. In fact that’s the way some of my ebooks started out, as articles which I compiled. I tend to be prolific, and I enjoy writing, so compiling an ebook from a bunch of articles is a no-brainer.

Re-purposing published articles into ebooks

With publishers rushing as much of their inventory online as possible, so they can wring the very last cent out of articles first published in the 1980s, you should do the same.

Drag out your old manuscripts, and convert them into ebooks. (Assuming of course, that you kept the electronic rights.) If you’ve got seven articles on parenting or other evergreen information, put them to work - create an ebook, or a series of ebooks, out of your inventory.

Want to develop a six-figure writing income?

The September 2007 issue of The Writer had a great story: “Secrets Of The Six-Figure Freelancers”. The story’s wonderful because it shows you the potential of a freelance writing career; with the development of the Web and its unlimited markets, if you can write, you can make a great income as a freelance writer.

I chuckled when I read the story because many writers think a “six figure income” is hype. Either that, or they think that a great income is reserved for copywriters, or genre novelists, or other specialist writers.

The fact is that YOU can develop a six-figure writing career: you just need to know that it’s possible to earn $250,000 a year and more as a freelance writer, and then make that your goal.
