Article Writing: Write and Sell Powerful and Useful How-to Articles

Many people go online to find information. This means that how-to articles, also known as tutorials, are very popular. You can sell tutorial articles to Web sites, and you can create your own Web sites using them too.

Here’s an easy four-step method to write how-tos and tutorials.

This is the exact process I used to write this article – so feel free to model the process.

1. Create an descriptive, keyword-rich title

Your first step is to write a title. This is just a working title – you can change it later, but write the title first because this keeps you focused on your topic. For example, your title could be: “Ten Steps to Writing a Successful Blog”, or “Five Ways to Perfect Souffles”.

If you’re selling your article to a specific Web site, check how the site presents its tutorials. Perhaps you’ve been asked to write the article by the site’s editor – if so, then follow the instructions you’ve been given exactly. Include links if the editor wants them.

2. Outline the steps of the process you’re describing

Next, make a list of the steps of the process you’re describing in your article. This list is your outline.

Decide whether you’ll be using graphics. Will you be using screen captures, photographs, or other visual material? If you are, prepare them now. Number the files, so you know in which order to include them in the article.

3. Write an introduction

With your outline and visual aids ready, write an introduction to the article.

4. Write each of the steps in the process you’re describing

Now just write each step in the process, describing the process as clearly as possible. Try to put yourself in the shoes of a complete novice to the process you’re teaching – what does the reader need to know?

When you’ve completed the steps, write a conclusion to the article and you’re done. How-to articles are easy to write, and easy to sell. They may become your favorite type of article.
