Blogging is a super-simple way to get freelance writing clients.
I love blogs because they’re a marketing tool which keeps on working for you, 24×7x365. Many writers find that they have to STOP blogging for a time once they’ve been blogging for a few months, because their blogs get them way more gigs than they can handle.
Here are my top five tips to using your blog as a marketing tool to get a stream of clients:
1. Join the blogging community. Leave comments on other blogs, with your blog’s URL as part of your signature. This may encourage other blog writers to link to your blog. At the very least, you’ll get an increase in traffic.
Make sure that the comments you leave add to the conversation in some way - your comments must be useful, or they’re treated as spam and deleted.
2. Post to your blog frequently, at least three to four times a week. Spell-check. Write as well as you can, but don’t sweat blood over it. Blogs are casual, so use a conversational style.
3. When writing blog posts, you don’t have to be outrageous, or post your most intimate secrets. Your aim is to market your freelance writing services. Share only what you’re comfortable sharing. Yes, you can mention client names, and link to client sites. However, please be kind.
Writers seem to be prone to baring their souls on their blogs, but your blog isn’t a form of therapy. Yes, writing as therapy is a great idea, but please don’t post your therapeutic writing online. I’ve read the blogs of several novelists who seem determined to kill their careers, because their blogs are so downbeat and sullen, and packed with complaints about their publishers. If you want to complain and whine, save it for your personal private journal (paper or computer). Write it - and burn it, NEVER post whines online. The Web is forever, remember.
5. Be truthful. Don’t make claims in your blog that you can’t back up. On the other hand, don’t be too timid. Your opinions are important.
