Freelance writing gigs: write what you love

by angela.booth on August 12, 2007

There’s a school of thought which states “do what you love, and the money will follow”. The idea being that when you follow your passion you’ll be successful.

This applies to writers. When you write about something you love, or are highly invested in, your writing will be successful, and you’ll get paid well.

I offer free coaching with my copywriting manual “Seven Days To Easy Money: Copywriting Success”, and it always charms me that copywriters whether they’re new to the writing business or are established writers, are so thrilled when they start getting clients.

It’s because they love what they write, and potential clients pick up on this. It gives the clients confidence in the writers, and confident clients open their wallets.

Big tip: the people who can hire you to write are just as nervous of making mistakes as you are. Your passion for what you do is disarming: they recognize that someone who is enthusiastic is likely to do a great job. You like working with people who love what they do, and so do they.

Get the gigs YOU want, every time

I’m not a fan of freelance writers’ job boards: the best gigs are never advertised. This means that you need to approach people and publications you want to write for yourself. Another big tip: if you really want to write for a publication, that’s a big clue that you CAN. You just need the confidence to approach the publication as many times as is necessary until you get hired.

Write what you love. The money will follow.
