How professional freelance writers get writing gigs

If you’re serious about your freelance writing career, you need to take action, as I discussed in this week’s Fab Freelance Writing Ezine.

The freelance job sites: you and a thousand other writers wasting time

Currently, every professional freelance writer I know is inundated with offers of writing gigs: far more than we could ever take on. I get several job offers every day.

Why do some freelancers get flooded with work?

There are a million writing gigs available right now. This is because the Web is becoming more central to the welfare of every business and every publication, and this means everyone and his brother is looking for a writer – especially a Web writer.

If you’re a new freelance writer, or are a lazy one, you’ll haunt the freelancing job boards looking for writing gigs. You’re wasting time.

Hint: the best gigs are never advertised. They go to known freelance writers. So if you want to boost your freelance writing career: get known. You need your own Web site, under your own domain name.

The big benefit of becoming known is that people looking for a writer come to you. Because your portfolio is online, they already know what you can do.

Having clients approach you saves you time and hassle. It also means that you’re in a good negotiating position. The client already knows your fees.

So the way to get writing gigs is to get known: get your own Web site and blog, and have clients come to you.
