Your freelance writer’s Web site – decide on your site’s purpose

by angela.booth on July 14, 2007

Your writer’s Web site can be many things, but primarily your Web site is your freelance writing staff: it’s your sales person, your media promoter, and your receptionist. Because your site is so important, before you create your Web site, you should decide on the site’s purpose.

What do you want your site to do?

Perhaps you want your site to:

* Showcase your writing expertise:

* Get writing gigs;

* Promote your new book;

* Build a platform (audience) for your writing;

* Promote your writing services;

* Build your brand…

Make a list of everything you want your site to do for you before you create your site. Then keep that list in front of you as you work on the site, or give the list to your site developer.

Many writers complain about their sites, that their site’s not getting them writing gigs for example, but when I look over the site, there’s not a single mention that the writer is a pen for hire. Often, there’s not even a contact form. Sounds unbelievable, but it happens so often that I’m starting to think it’s normal.

Remember: your site can only do what you want it to do for you if you create it that way.
