It’s June, so freelance writers everywhere should be thinking of magazine Christmas issues NOW. Depending on magazine lead times, it could already be too late to send queries to some of your favorite magazines.
However, that doesn’t mean that you should hold back, because selling to any client, whether it’s a magazine editor, book editor, or Web publisher is all about building relationships.
Build relationships for on-going writing gigs
If you’ve been reading my writing advice for any time at all, you know that I’m big on relationship-building, rather than simple sales. When you send queries and proposals with an aim to building a relationship, people do take notice. Once they get used to receiving a steady stream of professional, exciting story ideas from you, you become a known quantity. And known quantities get hired.
Everyone’s moving to the Web – propose Web story ideas
Another tip: print magazines are moving online – and more will continue to do so. This is because advertisers are switching their budgets to the Web, and all advertising-supported media go where the advertising dollars flow.
So propose yourself as a Web editor now – you’ll be credible if you’ve been building a relationship with a magazine, and if you show that you know how the Web works, because you have your own Web site and blog.
