Beginner’s mind is valuable to a freelance writer

Are you a new parent? A new dog owner? Learning to use your digital camera?

Whatever you’re new at, hundreds of thousands of people around the world are beginners too. You can write for them.

My writing students often quibble at this. They want to wait to write about a topic until they’re experts. Unfortunately, once you’re an expert, you may not be able to write for beginners at all. Of course you can try, but you lose “beginners mind”. You forget what you found challenging, because now you’re competent.

So if you’re looking for a topic to blog about, or write articles about, choose a topic in which you’re a beginner. You’re in the same boat as your audience, and they’ll be able to relate to your writing. Your beginner’s mind is a valuable asset.
