Every freelance writer needs copywriting skills, because like it or not, every piece of writing involves sales.

If you’re writing an article proposal for a magazine, it’s a sales job. If you’re writing a proposal for a book, it’s a massive sales job.

So, if freelance writing involves sales in EVERY area, you might as well accept it, and get good at it. I promise you, if you develop copywriting skills you’ll make more money in every area of writing.

Although we’re all surrounded by copy every day, you need to learn copywriting, because if you don’t, you’ll shoot yourself in the foot, as the writer below did.

Be proud, be loud… subtlety doesn’t work, because people can’t read your mind

Last weekend a friend of a friend asked me to look at her new Web site. “I did all the writing myself,” she said.

I cringed. Because when someone says that to you, there’s only one response: lavish praise.

Unfortunately, there was a huge problem with the site - the problem was so major that it made the site useless for its intended purpose, which was getting clients for this lady, who’s a consultant.

“Aaah… ah ummm… I really like the headline,” I began. “And I like the testimonials, they’re great.”

I found a few more things to praise, then I said softly: “You need to tell people what you do, and what you want them to do… You need to make it very clear. You can’t be subtle.”

She said that it was clear - she wanted people to call her.

“Yes, but you haven’t said that - it’s not on the page.”

It took some convincing, but finally she realized that what she THOUGHT was not on the page. Unless all her site visitors were mind readers, there was no way for them to know what they were supposed to do with the information she provided. Of course, they wouldn’t hang around to wonder - the average person spends less than seven seconds on a Web page.

Learn copywriting. It will help you to become a better writer.
