It’s important to set both process goals and monetary goals. Your process goals will take you to your monetary goals if you keep working.
The challenge for many writers is that they’re not prepared to do those things which will guarantee their writing success – both financial and otherwise.
To develop a lucrative freelance career it’s necessary that you spend at least half your writing time not on writing, but on promotional activities. However many writers just don’t do this.
The reasons they don’t do it are:
Firstly they don’t know how to promote themselves and their work, and secondly they find self-promotion boring.

If you find self-promotion boring, so do I! However I’ve found many ways to make it interesting and exciting and keep boredom at bay. You’ll find ways to make promotional activities exciting too, as long as you know the methods.
There are a million options and methods open to you. The methods you pick depend a great deal on your own temperament. I usually pick one self-promotional method a month, then I switch to something else.
At this stage in my career, I can afford to be rather slapdash about self-promotion, because I’ve been doing this for a long time. This is the benefit of consistent self-promotion in your career – sooner or later you have enough ongoing work that you can mostly forget about self-promotion and start exploring other moneymaking activities which are open to you because of your writing skills.
There is only one difference between you and a writer who is making a six-figure income. Once you have basic writing skills, how much you earn is up to you. The difference between you and the six-figure writer is that the six-figure writer chooses to do those things which many writers refuse to do — he or she spends a lot of time on self-promotion, and schedules those activities daily.
