Set your freelance writing goals for 2007

by angela.booth on December 17, 2006

Your freelance writing goals for 2007 need to be both production and money oriented.

Your first step in setting your goals is to work out how much you produced, on average, in 2006, and how much you earned in 2006.

If you haven’t kept a time log, keep one this week. A time log is just what it sounds like: a record of the time you spent working and a note of exactly what work you did. Although keeping a time log is boring, try to keep it for a full week. If you can’t manage that keep it for at least three days.

Set your freelance writing goals low, initially. Aim to exceed your production rate by 10 per cent and your monetary rate by 10 per cent too. This is a goal that you CAN achieve: anyone can achieve it.

If you’re a new freelance writer…
But what if you are not yet earning any freelance income at all? If you’re a new freelance writer, your first step is to earn some money — any amount of money — from your freelancing in 2007.

Be careful not to aim too high. If you have yet to earn $500 from your writing, don’t aim to earn $50,000 this year. Most writers are very insecure and very vulnerable. If you’ve never earned any money from freelance writing, yes, you could certainly earn $50,000, and much more in 2007. However, chances are that setting such a high goal would be too intimidating, and you’d give up before February.

If you’re a new freelance writer, set in monthly income goals. Set them low. If you earn $500 in January, aim to earn $1000 in February. You will find that this step by step method will inspire you. Each dollar you earn, will give you a little more confidence.
