In my copywriting courses I often recommend that you keep your eyes open as you browse the Web, and when you see a site that you feel you can help, you send the site a proposal, offering your freelance writing services.
For example, you may see a company Web site which has no effective About Us page, so you could propose this addition (or enhancement, if the page exists but doesn’t include good information.) You’ll find – in one out of ten cases – that you get the gig, and often, a lot more work as well.
When I suggest this to writers, sometimes I get the response: “That won’t work – you can’t say to someone that your Web site is useless and you need me to rewrite it for you…”
No, you can’t. But you can say: “Would you like me to show you how to get more traffic to your site?” Or “Would you like me to show you how you can make more sales from this page?”
Diplomacy is everything – you need to approach your proposal-writing from the point of view of your client, and show him what’s in it for him.
