Mark W. Lewis’s “Top 10 Lies told to Naive Artists and Designers” are classic lies which are told to freelance writers too. If you’ve been freelancing writing for a few years, you’ve heard all these and more.
My favorite lie: “Do this one cheap (or free) and we’ll make it up on the next one.” They have no intention of EVER hiring you again, they just want a price break. When you hear a variation of this one, run.
The challenge is to recognize the lies when you hear them, so don’t beat yourself up when you get taken in.
Here are some additional oldies but goodies:
* “We need to see more samples of the kind of work we want done.”
With this one, the client wants to do the work in-house, but he needs some samples which exactly match the work he’s doing, so he can copy the style and format. Be wary when the client keeps asking for more samples.
* “Yes, but how would you do it?”
With this lie, a sneaky one, you’re being asked to give away the store in a proposal. When you’ve told them how to do it, what do they need you for?
