Freelance writing for the Web: the unlimited market

in freelance writing for the Web

In 2006, around 75 per cent of my writing commissions have been to write for the Web in one form or another – Web site content, Web sales pages, Web newsletters and ezines, and Web advertising.

Why you should write for the Web
There are two reasons you should build your freelance Web writing business: low competition, and plentiful opportunities.

Low competition
Freelance writers are conservative. There’s a good reason for this: if you’ve been building relationships with editors for years, you don’t junk those relationships in a hurry. If you get a new editor who declines to send you work, you look for more of the same – for other print editors.

It takes TIME to get to know a new writing arena. If you’re writing eight hours a day anyway, you don’t have the energy to educate yourself in a new writing arena.

This means that if you’re a new freelance writer, or a freelancer who wants to switch to online writing, you have much less competition.

Lots of opportunities
Every Web site needs a writer. The larger the site, the more opportunities. It’s easy to pick up online writing jobs. The only challenge for a Web writer is educating your clients: showing them what good writing will do for their business.
